Letterpress printing is a 19th century style of specialty printmaking. The press leaves an beautiful impression in the paper making it a common choice for people designing wedding invitiations.
How long does a letterpress project take?
Generally two weeks is a good amount of time to expect for a letterpress project. If you're looking for a rush job, I am happy to work with you as best I can but will charge additional rush fees.
Is there a minimum/maximum amount for printing?
Yes, my minimum for custom orders is 25 prints, my maximum is flexible but 1000 is a good cap.
What are good projects for letterpress printing?
Most people might be familiar with letterpess from wedding invites, but along with wedding suites, there are so many other fun ways to utilize the press. Here are some ideas: -Menus -Party Invites / RSVP cards -Personalized Stationary -Business Cards -Hang tags -Coasters -Personalized thank you cards -Baby announcements -Personalized holiday cards -Gift Certificates -Promotional Post Cards
What are the size limitations?
My press is a small press and can't print anything larger than 6" x 8". I'm happy to refer you to other printers if you're looking for something larger.
How many colors can you print?
For each color that I print, I get a plate made, the more plates, the more expensive the project becomes. Most letterpress prints are 1-3 colors, but there's flexibility there.
Can you print specific PMS colors?
Yes, I can order a specific PMS color for you though it does incur an additional charge. I can also mix inks pretty close to match screen colors, but I don't do pantone matching so it is not an exact science and there is always some variation. If you're looking to match colors for a wedding suite I am happy to work with you to get as close as I can.
What paper can you print on?
My house paper is 110 lb, bright white, Crane's Lettra. This is the default for most projects but I happy to order special paper for your project. Generally the letterpress prints well on uncoated cardstock. French Paper and Neenah have lines of paper designed for letterpress printing that all work beautifully.
I can also print on envelopes, coasters, and heavy double thick cardstock.
I can not print on anything that is not flat, fabric, or coated.
Can you design and print the project?
Yes, I have extensive experience designing projects for letterpress printing and am happy to help with custom designs. If you already have a design, I am also happy to just provide the printing.
If you are looking for both design and printing services, you can expect the project to take between 3-4 weeks, depending on complexity.
How much does letterpress printing cost?
Letterpress is a specialty printmaking service and printing this way is more expensive than printing digitally. People who are interested in letterpress printing a project are looking for a quality hand printed product made with beautiful paper so naturally it costs more.
If you have a specific buget you need to work within, I can do my best to work with you to meet that. In general the average projects that I print (and this is just printing i.e. no design work) cost anywhere from $100-$500 depending on complexity. When you reach out to me with a project idea I can walk you through a quote and options that bring cost up or down.
Not every project is a good fit for letterpress printing. There's no shame in needing something fast and cheap, and if that's you, digital printing is your best bet. However if you're looking for something hand printed with beautiful paper, you're in the right place!
